The Woodlands community is one of remarkable design.  It is so fundamentally family friendly that it is natural for the mothers of the Woodlands to band together for support, fun, and community outreach.  Many “mom groups” start out focused on the typical weekly play date that is centered around one age group; however, as time passes, women have more children at different times causing design flaws for the play date for only the 3 year olds.  Or, new members with multiple children find it hard to have several weekly play dates for each child’s age group, become overwhelmed, and inactivate.  The new design of the Mothers of the Woodlands will be more Village-centered to align with the Mitchells’ master plan.  Features of the Mothers of the Woodlands include:

  • Play dates in a Village Family the first and third weeks of the month.  Residents of each Village come together to play.  By keeping it within the Village, moms can choose parks, pools, eateries, homes, etc. that can be walked or biked to, thus taking advantage of one of the primary unique features of the Woodlands: the pathways.  Further, it will foster the sense of community as you play with your neighbors.  Mixed age playgroups are the basis for the Montessori teaching method and have many advantages.  Not only do new moms get to benefit from experienced moms in the group, but little kids learn from the big ones and the big ones learn how to treat the little ones.  Further, how great is it to have familiar faces in every grade when kindergarten starts?
  • However, playing with kids of the same age should not be ignored.  This will likely naturally happen within the Village groups, but to ensure some age-appropriate activities, there will be monthly age group outings held on the second week of the month.  Siblings are ALWAYS welcome, but these may be good times to find a sitter or Village friend to leave a sibling with to give you a little one-on-one time with each child.
  • Quarterly, each Village Family will complete a community outreach project that involves the kids so that they are able to learn lessons along side Mom.
  • Most importantly, the group will offer a monthly night out for all moms on the first Thursday of every month.
  • Once, or possibly twice a year, the group will have a date night.
  • There will also be one large, annual event, typically a pool party.
The Mothers of the Woodlands does not look to create a calendar full of activities.  We are looking to create occasional group activities and play dates that give friendships a place to start.  With the Village Family approach, you will run in to those you met at the play dates around the Village: at the park, the pool, in the grocery store, at the PTA meeting, or in line at the post office.  From there, you can meet up on your own, catch a movie, or swap babysitter numbers.  After all, everything’s bigger in Texas.  It doesn’t take just one village to raise a child, it takes twelve.
